Tasks
Subtasks and dependencies
Subtasks split bigger work into pieces people can own. Dependencies show what has to finish first.
Add subtasks
- Open a task and find Subtasks on the Overview tab.
- Type in Add a subtask and click Add.
- Tick a subtask to complete it, or click it to open it and set an assignee, due date, or anything else.
The section shows progress, like "2 of 5". A subtask links back to its parent at the top of its own page.
Add a dependency
- Open the task that has to wait.
- Under Dependencies, click Add blocker.
- Pick the task it's waiting on. You can pick from tasks on the same board.
The waiting task lists it under Blocked by, and the other task lists this one under Blocking. Each shows whether it's open or done.
Good to know
- Subtasks are full tasks: they have their own key, comments, files, and activity. They live inside their parent and don't appear as separate cards on the board.
- To remove a blocker, open the waiting task and click the remove button next to it.
- With AI helpers on, Suggest steps can draft subtasks for you to review. See Use the AI helpers.
- Subtasks and dependencies are included on every plan.
